The fear of imperfection (Atelophobia). Look how it’s caused and deal with it.

Introduction:

Atelophobia is a compulsive aversion to flaws. This disorder makes a person fearful of making mistakes. They usually stay well away from circumstances where they believe they won't succeed. Atelophobia may cause anxiety, depression, and a low sense of self-worth. Today in this world many people are facing the fear of imperfection. This phobia will interrupt people's daily life actions. In this article, we will take a look at what are the reasons why Atelophobia (fear of imperfection) is caused and how it is treated.

Atelophobia:

Atelophobia is an extreme fear of imperfections. Atelophobics generally set incredibly high standards for themselves and have very severe opinions of themselves. They could become agitated over past mistakes or mistakes they fear committing in the future.

And further, if we look at perfectionism and Atelophobia, these both are actually different from each other. Perfectionism is a personality type in which a person sets high standards for himself and strives to achieve those goals.

But in Atelophobia people actually fear their mistakes. They fear what if they wouldn’t be perfect. They avoid situations in which they feel they can't be perfect or can make mistakes.

According to research, roughly 12% of adults and 19% of teenagers in the United States are thought to have a particular phobia at some point in their lives. They affect women nearly twice as frequently as they do men.

Causes of Atelophobia:

The majority of phobic disorders lack a clear cause yet Atelophobia can be caused by the following situations:

  • If you suffered severe punishments for committing mistakes in your childhood.

  • You have a family history of phobia or other mental problems.

  • Or you have always been stressed by your environment to be perfect in everything like your school grades, sports performance, etc.

  • When your parents compare you with others and say you should be better than other fellows, it leads you to have a fear of imperfection.

How to know that you have Atelophobia?

The most common symptoms of Atelophobia or fear of imperfection are:

  • You feel irritated.

  • You will feel a sense of sadness.

  • You started having depression.

  • You started viewing life negatively.

  • You get emotionally detached from the people around you.

  • You are unable to do something because of your fear.

  • And you are also unable to receive criticism.

It may also cause other health problems like nausea, heart palpitations, sweating, and upset stomach.

How can it be treated?

Atelophobia is treated in several ways including:

Proper diet and exercise:

People having fear of failure are advised to take a proper and healthy diet. They are also advised to do regular light exercises which can enhance their mood. Meditation and yoga is the best practice to treat anxiety and other mental problems.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

It mainly focuses on assisting you in altering the way that you view flaws. Investigate the causes of your tendency to view mistakes negatively rather than as opportunities for growth. Your therapist will help you pinpoint the precise triggers of your anxiety.

Exposure Therapy:

In exposure therapy, you are exposed to the things you are feared in a healthy and safe environment. Doing it will help you overcome your fears.

How to prevent fear of imperfection?

You can prevent fear of imperfection by engaging in a friend circle that appreciates you and supports you. Discuss all your fears with your friend or a therapist who can help you to overcome them in an effective way. This can also be prevented by considering your past mistakes and taking positive lessons from them so you can no longer feel aggressive about them.

Conclusion:

Fear of imperfection always happens to us at certain times in our lives because in today's world perfectionism is appreciated and being imperfect is always considered a bad thing. The extreme fear of being imperfect further leads to Atelophobia in which people are really scared of committing mistakes and even engaging in tasks in which they feel they can’t do well. This fear causes many difficulties in our daily life whenever we are about to do something new or something big and important to our career.
