Introduction:

 Whenever it comes to pursuing our dreams or achieving our goals the number one problem that we all face is consistency. Setting our goals and plans is so easy but to be on that goal for long after facing hurdles is hard for us. You all know the meaning of consistency but still, find it hard to make yourself consistent. If yes? Then no problem you have come to the right place. Today I will dive into what consistency actually is and how to keep consistent throughout your goal journey.

Consistency definition:

“Consistency is letting yourself put the same amount of effort everyday to your goals”

Here I used the word “letting yourself” because whenever we set a goal and start working on it, for some days we will be very consistent in doing and after some days we find it hard to be consistent with that task and we give up on it. Why do we give up? This all happens because we give the power to our brain to control ourselves and after some days it makes us take some break from the goal because it is finding it hard every day to put that same amount of effort every day. It gives you excuses and you give up. Our brains may just be biologically programmed to prefer laying on the couch, according to research findings that were just published in Neuropsychologia. So, whenever we work on a demanding task our brain keeps us from doing it. 

Here are some of the factors which come into the way of your consistency and how to overcome them.

Self Doubt:

                      Self-doubt is linked with consistency in a way that whenever you are on your goal journey and you face a problem. Sometimes the solution to the problem is straightforward and you find it quickly but sometimes the solution isn’t that simple and you have to do a lot of work in finding the solution. Here is the opportunity for the doubt to come in and beat your consistency and it always does. Self-doubt gives you the thinking that you are not capable enough to find the solution to the problem and you are not good enough to make it through and not intelligent enough to solve the problem. So it forces you to give and you give up. 

                         

You have to train your mind to lower this self-doubt voice and work on the problem. Whenever the self-doubt voice comes in the only thing that you have to tell yourself is that if I give up this time then I won’t be the same person to achieve my goal. If I give up today then I have to start from zero afterward. Because in reality whenever we give up we won’t be the same again and start with the same person again.

Your state of mind:

                 Your state of mind has a lot of impact on your consistency. Let’s say you have a lot of things going on in your mind and you are depressed about things. Then how would your brain work on your goal? How can the brain be able to focus on your goal? Let’s suppose that your goal is to write a book. And your brain is full of things like you are upset because of your current health, your financial situation, and depressed about your grades. In this condition, your brain has so many things going on and it's not able to think about the ideas for your book.

               

 In this case, you have to show your brain the benefits of your goal, and the rewards that your goal is going to give you. Only in this way does the brain shift its attention to your goal and forget about the problems. Because it’s our nature we can’t work on so many things at the same time, we have to allocate time to do things and if we do it all at the same time we end up being messed up. As the brain is depressed then how would it think about your book or give you new ideas?

Burnout:

                  Burnout is a type of tiredness brought on by a persistent sense of being overburdened. Excessive and ongoing emotional, bodily, and mental stress is the cause. When you are emotionally spent, overburdened, and unable to keep up with life's constant demands, burnout occurs. So, when your brain is stressed about things then you are going to feel burnout and you find it difficult to work on your goal. In this case, you often end up giving up on your goal.

                 

You can deal with your burnout by mindfulness meditation, light exercise, and making yourself less stressed about the things going on. Once you deal with your burnout you will be able to be consistent with your goal.

Comparing yourself with others:

                This is also a very important reason for giving up on your goals. Whenever we are working on a goal that’s hard we always compare our performance with others' performance and if they are doing well as compared to us, then we will end up giving up on that goal. Because we are comparing our performance to that of others, this kind of conduct causes us to consider the outcomes. We think that only they will succeed in achieving this goal because they are doing well and I am not able to do this.

               

You should have to keep in mind that everyone has their own way of doing things, everyone has their own mental capacity and their own experiences. You can’t compare your experiences with others. Otherwise in the end it will put you to give up. 

Chasing someone else’s goals:

                   Consistency breaks down when you are not truly passionate about your goal.  We are living in a social media world where we every day see other people's life on it. We got inspired by their goals and set them as our own goals without truly checking whether we are actually passionate about them or not. And after some time when we face hurdles during our goal journey, we give up on it because we aren’t truly passionate about our goal. We are only chasing it because others are doing it. You will be consistent on something when you are passionate about it.

              

Always follow the things you are passionate about. It’s totally okay to take inspiration from others and motivate yourself from other people's stories but chasing their goals is wrong. Find your passion and set your goals accordingly.

Conclusion:

              Consistent behavior is challenging to follow because there is always resistance to achieving your goal. Sometimes it's in the form of failures, sometimes in the form of problems, and sometimes in the form of our own self-doubt. By carefully managing our emotions and convincing ourselves to achieve our goal we can easily overcome all the factors that get in the way of our goal and can make consistent progress toward our goal.
